Summary
This study investigates ferroelectricity in multilayer WSe₂ and MoS₂ stacks, revealing evenly spaced interfacial potential steps indicative of confined electric fields—enabling multi-state "ladder-ferroelectrics." Unlike previous work limited to binary states, polarization here persists under high charge carrier densities (~10¹³ cm⁻²). Density functional theory shows how charge redistributes across layers, elucidating a doping-induced depolarization mechanism. Findings advance ferroelectric control in 2D materials for novel nanoelectronic applications.
The surface potential measurements were conducted via KPFM on Park NX10 AFM.
